Recruiting Event at Chaffee Zoo

This past Saturday, we were invited to attend the Cargill Meat Solutions Company Party at the Chaffee Zoo in Fresno.

This event, led by manager John Neiman and sponsored by the Cargill leadership team, drew an estimated 2,500 people to the zoo for an evening of fun, food and entertainment.  We (BPHSF) had a wonderful location near the entrance of the zoo; therefore, we had tremendous exposure and the opportunity to talk with hundreds of families about our program that night.

Thank you for the awesome support!

About Big Picture High School-Fresno
The vision of BPHSF is to help “One Kid at a Time” discover their passions and interests at an early age.  The interests of these students are then developed by intensive job shadowing and yearly internships with community business men and women who become their personal mentors.

We are hosting this event in recognition of our numerous community supporters.  Without the assistance of our support system, we would not have been able to accomplish everything we have: Fresno County Office of Education, Big Picture Schools, CA, Inc., Big Picture Learning, the Catholic Diocese of Fresno, Harris Construction, BSK Laboratories, Cargill Meat Solutions, SC Johnson Company, Avalanche Computers, USIGT Company, Fresno United Way, Fresno Regional Center, Southwest Social Security Department, St. Alphonsus Church, and many more individual supporters.

New Internship Helping the Fresno Community

Dear Colleagues, Friends and Family,

Two of our sophomores have been selected by the Poverello House Director of Volunteer Services to be the first Big Picture students to have an internship at their site.

The students selected, Gerardo E. and Eleazar P., both visited the Poverello House with other classmates and immediately requested to be considered for an internship position.

These young men truly represent the heart & soul of what Big Picture students can do to be a part of changing the world "One Student at a Time!!"

New School Mural

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Supporters,

Recently, starting July 18,2012, senior Damauria Dilworth and mentor Will Portis (Portis Gallery) began working on Big Picture's very first mural for the school.  Just this past week Damauria completed his dream of being the first Big Picture student to complete a full wall mural.
This coming Tuesday, Mr. Portis will begin training Damauria on canvas portraits.  While learning this new medium Damauria is now working on designing a school logo for our school office building that will face Trinity street.

This mentor, men-tee relationship is an example of the Big Picture philosophy and how education can help students take advantage of their passions and interests while in high school.

Go Panthers,

Jon

Student Interns at Chaffee Zoo!

Dear colleagues, friends and family members,

I am so proud to announce to you that senior Reyna Martinez will be starting her third Internship year with the Fresno Chaffee Zoo. Reyna has been working with mentor Adrienne Castro, Director of Education at the Chaffee Zoo.

This year Reyna will be working to learn more about the animals diets, behaviors and needs. Eventually she hopes to be able to work directly with the animals after these learning experiences. Adrienne says that Reyna's future dream of working hands-on with the zoo animals is one of the highest achievements for volunteers and usually takes 5 years to move to this level.

In addition to this new possibility Reyna is going to publish a children's fictional story book complete with her drawings of certain zoo animals with her own poetry to accompany each drawing. Reyna, while working with Adrienne will have to get the approval of Adrienne's superior to move ahead on each step in her project. The completeion of this project will be the culmination of a published work through our Big Picture Publishing Company. If given the approval to sell her work she would like to donate some of the proceeds back to the zoo in appreciation for their years of support while in high school.

Reyna has become a valuable asset to our school and our Zoo and we are very proud to call her a Big Picture High School student!! She plans to go on to college next year and major in a field related to working with animals.

Best wishes and great success for the fulfillment of all your dreams!!

Jon

Citing Sources and Avoiding Plagiarism

Plagiarism occurs when a student, with intent to deceive or with reckless disregard for proper scholarly procedures, presents any information, ideas or phrasing of another as if they were his/her own and/or does not give appropriate credit to the original source. Proper scholarly procedures require that all quoted material be identified by quotation marks or indentation on the page, and the source of information and ideas, if from another, must be identified and be attributed to that source. Students are responsible for learning proper scholarly procedures (from Duke University's Bulletin of Information & Regulations).

Plagiarism charges can be brought against you for the following offenses:

Copying, quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing from any source without adequate documentation
Purchasing a pre-written paper (either by mail or electronically)
Letting someone else write a paper for you
Paying someone else to write a paper for you
Submitting as your own someone else's unpublished work, either with or without permission

Learn more about the importance of citing sources in Whose idea was that?, a short video created by Simone Watson (Trinity '13).
